Feldenkrais Method®
The Feldenkrais Method® is based on a unique combination of biomechanics, neuroscience, and motor development. It is designed to interact with the brain’s neuroplasticity to bring lasting changes which will benefit the body through more efficient use of it.
Benefits
This somatic practice combines mindful attention and gentle movement to increase our ability to sense and feel how we move and deepen our self-awareness.
It is beneficial to everyone - improving their physical comfort, posture, flexibility, balance, coordination and ease of movement. It is very helpful to those who experience restricted movement, injury, chronic pain, or neurological and developmental problems.
What to expect
The Feldenkrais Method® is delivered in two ways. Both are called “lessons” because your brain is learning throughout and communicating this new information to your body via the central nervous system.
- Awareness Through Movement® - group classes taught mostly on the floor but also in sitting/standing. The teacher verbally guides the class through a series of exploratory movements designed to help students feel skeletal connections and discover how they can do less to move more by using their whole self. Verbal directions are processed by the motor cortex which means that neuromuscular pathways are opened or re-wired resulting in permanent change. This is very different to learning visually where the visual cortex is used to mimic the movement.
- Functional Integration® - individual hands-on sessions where the practitioner gently guides the student through a range of safe, easy movement explorations to help them understand their current habits/patterns and discover new possibilities. This approach is well-suited to exploring recurring pain/injury patterns and specific movement patterns such as sporting activity and musical performing.
